Sailing trip for beginners and novices without sailing experience

last updated: 28. April 2026

Your first sailing trip begins without any prior knowledge

Wind in the sails, the sound of the waves and that special moment when the yacht picks up speed – a sailing trip awakens longing and a thirst for adventure, but also the question: Can I even go on board without sailing experience?

The good news is that you can come on board without any previous experience, regardless of whether you are new to sailing or have never been on a yacht before. At Sailing-Classics, you are one thing above all else on our large yachts from 38 to 54 meters in length: our guest! This means that you can sail along as a beginner, without a sailing license and without experience, while our professional crew including skipper take care of everything in the background during your sailing vacation. In contrast to a berth charter, where the focus is on active sailing, our motto is “everything can, nothing must”.

The focus of your sailing trip on one of the three stylish large yachts in the most beautiful areas of the Mediterranean Sea, the Caribbean and the Atlantic is on an exclusive, personally supervised sailing experience far removed from classic sailing cruises. You decide whether you want to sail actively as a beginner or simply sit back and relax. Enjoy all-round care with a private chef, air-conditioned cabins with bathrooms and full board and the luxury of indulging in idleness without a guilty conscience.

However, if you would like to gain experience as a beginner sailor, you are just as welcome to do so. For example, you can assist our crew with setting the sails or steering and, of course, ask them any questions you may have. This will make your first sailing cruise an effortless introduction to the world of sailing – and perhaps the start of a new passion.

What awaits you on board - a typical day

Wondering what you do on the sea all day, even if you’re not actively sailing? This is what a typical day on our sailing yachts looks like.

Captain Joan of the KAIRÓS wrote the following:

You wake up to the gentle rocking of the waves and the slowly dawning daylight in your air-conditioned cabin with bathroom – and instinctively follow the delicious smell, because fresh coffee is already waiting for you on deck with a view of a new bay. Perhaps you’ll take your first dip in the sea before heading to breakfast, which the private chef prepares for you every morning. While you enjoy a freshly squeezed orange juice and the first warming rays of sunshine of the day, your captain will speak to you and present the plan for the day.

During the day - sailing, swimming, exploring

After this gentle start to the day, it’s time to set sail, turn off the engines – and the journey continues. If you would like to get a taste of sailing as a beginner on your sailing vacation, there is an option to join in at the helm and learn more about what you actually need to sail. Or you can treat yourself to a wonderfully lazy day on board and limit your activity to swimming stops in between, snorkeling trips, your first attempts on a stand-up paddleboard or an excursion in a kayak, in which you glide silently across the glittering sea. The four to six hours under sail will fly by and a light lunch awaits you, because so much sea air is known to make you hungry.

Evening - enjoyment and community

You have reached your destination for the day and anchor in a harbor or a quiet bay. If you wish, you can go ashore or take your time to reflect on the day on deck. As the sun slowly moves towards the horizon and bathes the sea in shimmering shades of red, purple and gold, bring the day to a close with a multi-course dinner and a sundowner in good company.

Can I still sail as a beginner?

Are you a beginner but would like to learn to sail on a large yacht during your vacation? Then Sailing-Classics is the right place for you. A sailing trip with a skipper is ideal for beginners, as you don’t have to worry about anything and at the same time have the opportunity to get to know sailing step by step. During the sailing trip, you will be offered numerous opportunities to join in, so that you can actively lend a hand and sail along if you wish.

You can look forward to a real hands-on experience: setting sails, trimming, steering – the experienced, friendly crew will show you all the moves directly on board. On a sail area of around 1,000 square meters, you will quickly feel the power and dynamics of such a large yacht. This dimension alone makes sailing on your luxury sailing trip an impressive experience.

Participation is welcome, as is relaxation. There is no obligation for anything, neither for active sailing nor in the form of an on-board duty roster that assigns cooking or other tasks. You don’t have to worry about anything. Your relaxation and comfort come first at all times and you will be pampered all round.

4 typical concerns of sailing beginners and why they are unfounded

Do you still have one or two “buts” in the back of your mind? That’s quite normal, especially if you’re a beginner and planning a sailing cruise for the first time. We address the most frequently asked questions and concerns about a sailing cruise for beginners here and show you why you can relax and get involved.

"I will definitely get seasick"

Our large sailing yachts move very calmly and stably on the water, making seasickness very unlikely. Routes are also dynamically adjusted underway depending on the weather – for a pleasant sailing experience. However, if you do feel unwell, there are little tricks you can try. For example, you can drink ginger tea, eat light food and fixate on the horizon. Don’t hesitate to speak to our crew on the way if you feel seasick.

"I need a sailing license after all"

No, as our guest you do not need a sailing license. The experienced crew will guide the yacht, and even if you want to actively help out, you don’t need a sailing license. You would only need this if you chartered a sailing boat yourself.

"Is a sailing trip safe for beginners?"

We can assure you that our yachts are equipped with the latest safety technology including life rafts, EPIRB, AIS and radar. In addition, our professionally trained crew, including an experienced skipper, is on board and prepared for all situations. As a guest, you will also receive a safety briefing before the trip so that you know what to do in an emergency.

"A sailing ship is far too small"

Our large sailing yachts combine size and comfort. With a length of 54 meters and a sail area of 1,000 square meters, the CHRONOS and the RHEA are among the top 50 largest sailing yachts in the world. Spacious Teak decksair-conditioned cabins with bathrooms and an indoor area with a saloon and bar as an additional retreat offer plenty of space so that there is never a feeling of confinement. Whenever the weather permits, meals take place in the fresh air with a view of the vast sea, underlining the generous feeling of space on board.

Which cruise is ideal for beginners?

Would you like to go on a sailing vacation as a beginner and are wondering which areas are best suited and how much time you should plan for an ideal experience? We will give you specific recommendations to make your first sailing trip a complete success and whet your appetite for more sailing trips.

Taster cruises (3 to 4 nights)

The taster cruise is ideal for testing whether this way of traveling suits you. On a short trip in the Mediterranean Sea on one of our yachts, you can enjoy full comfort, slowly feel your way around and have the perfect introduction that will hopefully whet your appetite for a longer sailing trip.

Classic Sailing Yacht Journey (7 nights)

A week at sea – this sailing cruise is our bestseller, especially for beginners. Enjoy the refreshing mix of sailing, swimming, shore excursions, first-class food and a relaxing time on board.

The best spots for beginners

For a first sailing trip, we recommend routes for beginners that are rather calm in sheltered waters and with little swell. For example, book a sailing trip to the Caribbean to the British Virgin Islands, or in the Mediterranean Sea to the divinely beautiful Amalfi Coast, to the deep blue waters of Croatia or to the varied Greek islands such as Corfu or Zakynthos, where moderate winds and dream scenery await you. Mallorca is also easily accessible and ideal for a sailing vacation for beginners. If you are drawn to the paradisiacal beaches of the Caribbean, take advantage of the steady trade winds and sail at the best time from November to April.

Recommended yachts for beginners

At Sailing-Classics, you can choose between three yachts, all of which impress with upscale furnishings, maritime comfort and plenty of space for privacy and socializing. All sailing yachts are also suitable for beginners and can be booked for sailing in the Caribbean or the Mediterranean Sea. Choose the right yacht for you and secure your place on board.

With a length of 54 meters and around 1,000 square meters of sail area, the CHRONOS and her sister ship RHEA offer significantly more space and comfort. With space for up to 26 guests, they are particularly suitable for travelers who want to combine the sailing experience with maximum spaciousness and an upscale ambience.

Whichever yacht you choose, you can expect the highest level of elegance, personal service and stylish ambience on board.
