An Overview of Our Sailing Destinations in the Mediterranean Sea

When sailing in the Mediterranean Sea, you can choose from a variety of sailing destinations, each with its own unique charm.

Italy and the Tyrrhenian Sea

The Amalfi Coast and the Gulf of Naples—featuring Positano, Capri, and Ischia—welcome you with spectacular coastlines and Italian elegance. Around Sicily & the Lipari Islands—including Stromboli and Vulcano—you can marvel at active volcanoes. Sardinia – Corsica combine turquoise waters with rugged natural beauty. This region epitomizes the dolce vita, dramatic landscapes, and world-class cuisine.

Spain and the Western Mediterranean Sea

The Balearic Islands—Mallorca, Ibiza, and Formentera—are known for their turquoise calas—picture-perfect swimming coves—and their typically lively atmosphere. Further north along the French Mediterranean coast around St. Tropez, you’ll find sophisticated marinas, charming coastal towns, and a stylish ambiance. The combination of short flight times, excellent infrastructure, and diverse coastlines makes this western Mediterranean region particularly convenient and versatile.

The Adriatic Sea around Croatia and Venice

The Croatian Adriatic coast, with its thousands of islands and the Kornati archipelago, is one of the most diverse sailing destinations in Europe. Sheltered bays, short distances, and clear water define the sailing experience, as do shore excursions to historic port cities. The area is complemented by the romantic lagoon city of Venice. In the northern Adriatic, culture, architecture, and maritime tradition come to life. An ideal destination for relaxed island hopping combined with cultural diversity!

Greece, with the Aegean and Ionian Seas

The Cyclades, centered around Santorini with its impressive caldera and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Delos, are known for their distinctive landscapes and journeys through antiquity. Corfu & the Ionian Islands around Zakynthos and Kefalonia offer lush greenery and unique natural and cultural wonders, such as Navagio Bay, the “Smugglers’ Cove.” The Peloponnese, with the Saronic Gulf, combines culture with authentic Greek charm. This sailing region offers the full spectrum of sailing experiences, from challenging and windy to sheltered and relaxing.

Malta, Comino, and Gozo

Compared to other sailing destinations in the Mediterranean Sea, the Maltese waters are still something of an insider’s secret. Malta captivates visitors with its historic charm and central location in the Mediterranean Sea. The Blue Lagoon off Comino is one of the most impressive anchorages, while Gozo charms with its unspoiled tranquility. A warm climate and a long sailing season make this area particularly attractive for leisurely cruises.

It becomes especially magical at sundown. As the sun slowly sinks below the horizon, that very special Mediterranean light emerges. Enjoy the special atmosphere of this moment and raise a toast with your fellow travelers.

Wind and Weather in the Mediterranean Sea

In the Mediterranean Sea, several distinctive regional winds shape the sailing experience. These wind patterns range from brisk and vigorous to calm and steady, making the sailing area particularly diverse.

The Meltemi is a strong north wind in the Aegean Sea that brings challenging sailing conditions to the Cyclades during the peak season from mid-June to mid-September. The Mistral is a cold, strong northwest wind that blows primarily along the Côte d’Azur as well as around Sardinia – Corsica, and is most common in the spring and fall. In the Adriatic Sea, the Bora can suddenly set in as a gusty downwind, requiring careful route planning and constant vigilance. The Ionian Sea around Corfu is characterized by the milder Maestrale, which ensures relaxed sailing. The warm Scirocco brings muggy air and, occasionally, Saharan dust from the south into the central Mediterranean Sea. In addition, the Tramontana also plays a role in some regions.

On board the large yacht, the experienced crew ensures that these winds are actively factored into route planning and that the sailing experience remains safe and varied, taking the Beaufort scale into account.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cruises on the Mediterranean Sea (FAQ)

As a sailing destination, the Mediterranean Sea offers eleven sailing areas in five countries between Spain and Greece. These include, in the western Mediterranean Sea, Mallorca and the Balearic Islands as well as the Côte d’Azur around St. Tropez; in the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Amalfi Coast, Sicily & the Lipari Islands, Sardinia – Corsica; in the Adriatic, Croatia and Venice; and in Greece, the Cyclades, the Ionian Sea around Corfu, and the Peloponnese; the selection is rounded out by Malta, including Comino and Gozo. Each sailing destination has its own unique character—ranging from sophisticated to unspoiled.

The sailing season in the Mediterranean Sea runs from May through October. May, June, September, and October are considered the off-season, with a milder climate ranging from 20 to 29 °C and fewer crowds, while July and August are the warmest and busiest months. Southern destinations such as Malta and Greece have a longer, warmer season with water temperatures up to around 29 °C; the Côte d’Azur is slightly cooler, with temperatures ranging from 26 to 29 °C.

A one-week sailing trip in the Mediterranean Sea with Sailing-Classics starts at around €3,500 per person; during peak season, prices typically range from about €3,700 to €4,300 (as of 2026). The price includes the cabin, full board on board, and sailing with an experienced crew; beverages other than water, tea, and filter coffee, a weekly dinner ashore, and travel to the destination are additional. The exact price depends on the sailing area, yacht, cabin category, and season.

No sailing license is required for a sailing trip in the Mediterranean Sea with Sailing-Classics. Guests travel aboard a large yacht whose experienced crew handles navigation, safety, and route planning—based on the principle of “everything is possible, nothing is required.” You can actively help with sailing or simply enjoy the trip; no prior experience is necessary.

For beginner sailors, sheltered areas in the Mediterranean Sea with short legs and calm waters are particularly suitable, especially the Saronic Gulf and the Ionian Sea around Corfu, as well as Croatia and the Sardinia – Corsica route. There, the distances between anchorages are short and rough seas are rare. In contrast, sailing in the Cyclades is more challenging and windier, especially in midsummer when the meltemi blows.

Sailing in the Mediterranean Sea is shaped by several distinctive regional winds. The Meltemi is a strong north wind in the Aegean Sea and shapes the sport of sailing in the Cyclades from mid-June through mid-September; the Mistral is a cold northwest wind that blows primarily along the Côte d’Azur as well as around Sardinia – Corsica, mostly in the spring and fall. In the Adriatic Sea, the bora—a gusty downwind—can set in suddenly, while the Ionian Sea is characterized by the milder maestrale and the central Mediterranean Sea is occasionally influenced by the warm sirocco from the south. On board, the experienced crew actively factors these winds into their route planning.

The main difference lies in the season and the nature of the sailing. The Mediterranean Sea is sailed from May through October and, with eleven sailing areas, offers a wealth of cultural diversity, short travel times, and varying regional winds. The Caribbean’s peak season runs from November through April, thanks to the steady trade winds, and it boasts a tropical climate and idyllic beaches. Those looking for short flight times and culture should choose the Mediterranean Sea; those seeking a sense of adventure and tropical flair should choose the Caribbean.
