“Major” Atlantic Crossing to the Caribbean

For sailors – the east-west Atlantic crossing – along the so-called barefoot route to the Caribbean. A dream for many sailors – doing the Atlantic once. Guests can help set and trim the sails, join the watch schedule, and even take the helm themselves. But: ‘Everything is optional’

Itinerary

Every sailing trip follows the conditions of nature. The itinerary shown is a non-binding orientation and can change depending on wind and weather.

Individual arrival in Tenerife and boarding in the afternoon. On board, you will meet your fellow sailors, the crew, and of course the yacht. During a detailed briefing, you will learn everything important about life and routines on board during the coming days at sea.

At the first shared dinner, there is time to get to know each other and to look ahead to the upcoming passage. The captain explains the current weather situation and the planned routing for the next days.

After breakfast, it’s time to cast off. The coast slowly recedes and ahead lies the open sea. From now on, the yacht is underway nonstop – day and night.

Whenever conditions allow, we sail. Those who wish can support the crew with setting and trimming sails, take the helm, and learn more about navigation and seamanship. Participation is warmly encouraged but not mandatory.

On a delivery, the sea sets the daily rhythm. There are no fixed daily programs and no ports that must be reached at a certain time. Instead, long sailing hours alternate with shared meals and quiet moments on deck.

The yacht continues its journey even at night. Those who wish can experience sailing under the starry sky and gain a very special impression of what a longer passage at sea feels like.

There is much to observe along the way: dolphins often accompany the bow for a while, flying fish skim over the water surface, and with a bit of luck, a whale may even appear on the horizon. Between these moments lie hours where only sea and sky are visible – this is exactly what makes a delivery so special.

With every nautical mile, familiarity with the ship and its routines grows. The crew provides insights into navigation, weather, sailing maneuvers, and life at sea. Thus, the passage itself becomes the actual destination.

After several days at sea, the coast finally appears on the horizon. The last nautical miles offer one more chance to enjoy sailing and the shared time on board.

After arrival, the traditional Captain’s Dinner takes place. Together with the crew and fellow sailors, you reflect on the distance covered and the special moments of the delivery.

After a final shared breakfast, it’s time to say goodbye to the crew, fellow sailors, and the yacht. Disembarkation and individual departure or extension of your stay on land.

An intense time at sea comes to an end – with many nautical miles sailed and a completely new perspective on travelling under sail.

Atlantic crossing with the KAIRÓS – sailing as part of the crew

This journey is not for passengers, but for true sailors! On the KAIRÓS we cross the Atlantic from Tenerife to Tobago, and you are right in the middle of it, not just along for the ride. As part of the crew, you take part in watches, steer the ship, trim the sails, and navigate together with the experienced regular crew across the ocean.

A “Medical” / sea-worthiness certificate is mandatory for this trip and sailing experience is welcome, as teamwork counts on board! Accompanied by the steady trade winds, we enjoy the pure sailing feeling: endless expanse, breathtaking sunrises, and the interplay of wind and waves. An ideal opportunity for all who want to collect ocean miles for SHS/RYA sailing certificates or actively experience the Atlantic under sail.

Of course, we also offer our usual service and delicious food provided by our regular crew.

Important information

You can conveniently reach the Mediterranean ports with common airlines. The Cape Verde Islands and Azores are best reached via Lisbon. Return flights from the Caribbean to Europe usually go via London or Paris. For the return crossing to the Mediterranean, you fly via London to Antigua. Depending on the length of the trip, you should allow a buffer of 1-3 days for the return flight or book a flexible ticket.

The travel price includes: costs for the nautical crew and service, accommodation on board in the booked category, sea transport, full board on board, water, tea, filter coffee. The price does not include: arrival and departure, transfers, soft drinks, Nespresso and alcoholic beverages, and tips. Special note: Please be aware that service is limited during deliveries. Participants are considered fellow sailors who can assist the crew with watches and other routine tasks on board. Since the sea can be rough at times, a certain level of physical fitness is required. Sailing experience is an advantage. Possible port and stopovers depend on the route and time frame. The final decision lies with the captain. Depending on wind and weather conditions as well as technical conditions of the ship, the start and duration of the delivery trip and any stopovers may vary without either party having further claims. For the return flight, a buffer of at least 1 day (regular deliveries), at least 2 days (’small’ Atlantic crossing), or at least 3 days (Atlantic crossing) should be planned or a flexible ticket booked. During a delivery, the ship is brought from A to B within a given timeframe, and we may also have to motor. We point out that any known pre-existing medical conditions must be communicated in good time before the start of the trip.

Sailing on the Atlantic is usually associated with the trade winds, which blow steadily in many areas. The weather can vary on long crossings, from calm conditions to heavy seas, and the influences of the Gulf Stream as well as crossing cold fronts require special attention. Up-to-date weather information is crucial to navigate through the various conditions in the Atlantic.

Life on board the Sailing-Classics yachts is very safe and well organised. The vessels meet the highest safety standards and are inspected annually. The captain and helmsman are graduates of a professional maritime college and undergo continuous professional development. The rest of the crew also receive intensive training in how to deal with emergencies. A compulsory safety briefing takes place at the start of every voyage. Furthermore, despite their speed, the yachts sail with remarkable stability – even in heavy weather, hardly any water comes on deck.

Both German and English are spoken on board the Sailing-Classics yachts. The language used amongst the international crew is English, whilst they communicate with guests in both German and English. On the KAIRÓS, we cannot always guarantee communication in German.

Meals on board Sailing-Classics are organised on a full-board basis and are included in the tour price. The day begins with a generous breakfast buffet, followed by a light two-course lunch and coffee and cake in the afternoon. In the evening, the on-board chef prepares a three-course dinner. On the final evening, the festive Captain’s Dinner is the culinary highlight. Once a week, a dinner is held ashore to sample the regional cuisine – this is not included in the tour price. Special dietary requirements and allergies can be catered for if notified in advance.

Sailing-Classics organises shore excursions using the crew’s motorised dinghies. On request, the crew will take you ashore and collect you again free of charge – simply let the team know in good time. In addition, in many sailing areas, the crew organises guided shore excursions with a local guide or accompanied by a crew member. The price per participant is communicated in advance and charged to your on-board account. Of course, you are also welcome to explore the surrounding area on your own.

The cabins on board the Sailing-Classics yachts are comfortable and practically furnished. Each cabin has its own en-suite bathroom with a toilet and shower cubicle, individually controlled air conditioning, a wardrobe, a hairdryer, and hand and bath towels. 230-volt sockets are available for charging electronic devices. A reusable water bottle is provided in every cabin and can be refilled at the water dispenser in the saloon.

At Sailing-Classics, you’re warmly invited to get actively involved in sailing – no prior experience or sailing licence required. You can help set and trim the sails, take the helm yourself, or lend a hand with other tasks on deck. The crew will be happy to explain the basics of sailing to you, show you how radar navigation works on the bridge, or give you a tour of the engine room. Those who prefer to relax can simply enjoy the passing scenery – the motto is: ‘Everything is possible, nothing is compulsory.’

To cancel your sailing holiday with Sailing-Classics, please send your cancellation request by email to info@sailing-classics.com. Written notification is required so that the cancellation can be processed officially. Depending on when the cancellation is made, Sailing-Classics’ tiered cancellation terms and conditions will apply. We strongly recommend that you take out travel cancellation insurance to protect yourself financially.
