Sailing trip from Martinique to Dominica & the Îles des Saintes

We set off from Sainte-Anne in the south of Martinique, a French overseas department, and sail via Saint-Pierre, overlooked by the Montagne Pelée volcano, whose eruption in 1902 marked the birth of volcanology as a science (there is an interesting museum). We then sail on to the nature island of Dominica, an independent state that is still home to communities of the Caribbean’s indigenous people, as well as a large number of endemic plants and animals. A deep-sea trench off the island is also home to sperm whales, which with a little luck can be spotted from on board. Our next destination is the Îles des Saintes, seven islands settled mostly by Breton fishermen and politically part of Guadeloupe. A very different side of the Caribbean from the islands where sugar cane was grown and the slave trade flourished.

Itinerary

Every sailing trip follows the conditions of nature. The itinerary shown is a non-binding orientation and can change depending on wind and weather.

Travel to Martinique and transfer to St. Anne. Once on board, you meet the crew who will look after you over the coming days. At the welcome dinner on deck you savour your first Caribbean impressions.

The day begins with a refreshing swim in the sea. After a leisurely breakfast on deck, it’s time to cast off. We set sail along Martinique’s picturesque coast and enjoy our first hours on the warm Caribbean Sea. We sail past Diamond Rock and may even be accompanied by dolphins for a while. In the early afternoon we make a first short stop at Anse d’Arlet, where you can go ashore and take a look around the small, lively village. Then we continue to St. Pierre. Right on cue for sunset, the day’s sundowner is served.

After an active start to the day with a swim, we set course for Dominica, arriving in time for afternoon coffee and cake. During the crossing you can enjoy life on board, admire the view or lend a hand with the sailing. In the afternoon we arrive in Dominica, where there is time for a stroll ashore or a relaxed evening on board.

After breakfast our island tour begins, exploring Dominica’s lush nature. The tour leads from Roseau through the tropical rainforest to the Emerald Pool and along the dramatic east coast through the Kalinago Territory. After a lunch of local specialities we visit a chocolate factory, before returning to the yacht along the picturesque west coast.

In the morning we sail to the Îles des Saintes, the Islands of the Saints. There is the option to visit the “Pain de Sucre” beach, perfect for snorkelling or a stroll along the sand. Afterwards, coffee and cake are served on the beach. Chocolate cake, iced coffee and water between your toes – pure bliss! Back on board we enjoy a sundowner before going ashore for dinner in the bay of Terre-de-Haut.

We sail on to the Pigeon Islands. Today the Caribbean’s fascinating coral reefs take centre stage. On a snorkelling excursion you can watch colourful shoals of fish, corals and other marine life. Afterwards there is plenty of time to relax on board or enjoy the tranquil bay.

We sail towards Falmouth Harbour. We reach our destination towards evening and stop for a refreshing swim. To round off the voyage, the Captain’s Dinner is served with an excellent four-course menu, as together you look back once more on the experiences of the past days.

After the last breakfast on board, it’s time to say goodbye. You leave the yacht with a wealth of memories of impressive days under sail, dreamlike anchorages, fascinating nature and the very special atmosphere of a Caribbean voyage under sail.

Important information

Martinique can be reached almost daily with Air France via Paris. Alternatively, you can travel via or from the USA (direct flight from Miami).

The cruise price includes: costs for the nautical crew and service, accommodation on board in the booked category, sea transport, full board on board / one evening per week to discover the local cuisine at your own expense, water, tea, filter coffee. The price does not include: arrival and departure, transfers, soft drinks, Nespresso and alcoholic beverages, water sports from on board, shore excursions and gratuities.

The best time to travel to the Caribbean is between December and April – ideal for soaking up the sun in winter. It is then tropically warm with water temperatures of 24-26°C and air temperatures of 24-30°C – occasionally there are short tropical rain showers. The constant trade winds ensure perfect sailing conditions.

Life on board the Sailing-Classics yachts is very safe and well organised. The vessels meet the highest safety standards and are inspected annually. The captain and helmsman are graduates of a professional maritime college and undergo continuous professional development. The rest of the crew also receive intensive training in how to deal with emergencies. A compulsory safety briefing takes place at the start of every voyage. Furthermore, despite their speed, the yachts sail with remarkable stability – even in heavy weather, hardly any water comes on deck.

Both German and English are spoken on board the Sailing-Classics yachts. The language used amongst the international crew is English, whilst they communicate with guests in both German and English. On the KAIRÓS, we cannot always guarantee communication in German.

Meals on board Sailing-Classics are organised on a full-board basis and are included in the tour price. The day begins with a generous breakfast buffet, followed by a light two-course lunch and coffee and cake in the afternoon. In the evening, the on-board chef prepares a three-course dinner. On the final evening, the festive Captain’s Dinner is the culinary highlight. Once a week, a dinner is held ashore to sample the regional cuisine – this is not included in the tour price. Special dietary requirements and allergies can be catered for if notified in advance.

Sailing-Classics organises shore excursions using the crew’s motorised dinghies. On request, the crew will take you ashore and collect you again free of charge – simply let the team know in good time. In addition, in many sailing areas, the crew organises guided shore excursions with a local guide or accompanied by a crew member. The price per participant is communicated in advance and charged to your on-board account. Of course, you are also welcome to explore the surrounding area on your own.

The cabins on board the Sailing-Classics yachts are comfortable and practically furnished. Each cabin has its own en-suite bathroom with a toilet and shower cubicle, individually controlled air conditioning, a wardrobe, a hairdryer, and hand and bath towels. 230-volt sockets are available for charging electronic devices. A reusable water bottle is provided in every cabin and can be refilled at the water dispenser in the saloon.

At Sailing-Classics, you’re warmly invited to get actively involved in sailing – no prior experience or sailing licence required. You can help set and trim the sails, take the helm yourself, or lend a hand with other tasks on deck. The crew will be happy to explain the basics of sailing to you, show you how radar navigation works on the bridge, or give you a tour of the engine room. Those who prefer to relax can simply enjoy the passing scenery – the motto is: ‘Everything is possible, nothing is compulsory.’
