The Aeolian Islands have seven different islets: in Vulcano, the sulphur springs bubble right next to the harbor, volcanic glass is mined on Lipari and Panarea is the VIP island with its pretty hidden villas. In contrast to this are the sleepy islets of Filicudi and Alicudi. Salina is the home of capers and the delicious Malvasia wine, not to mention the active Stromboli volcano, which is over 900 meters high and repeatedly sends glowing chunks of lava down from the northern slope, hissing as they sink into the sea.
For travel from Syracuse, we recommend traveling by flight via Catania. The airport there is served several times a week.
It can be hot in summer and on land, but not on board, where there is usually a cooling breeze. Rather weak or light thermal winds. In the fall, a low can also pass through. This happens rather quickly within a day and longer periods of bad weather are very rare.
We start in the ancient cosmopolitan city of Syracuse, from there we sail past Mount Etna, visit Taormina if possible, the “most beautiful balcony in Europe” according to Goethe, and then sail through the Strait of Messina past the monster Scylla and the whirlpool Charibdis, which are said to have threatened Odysseus on his odyssey. From there, continue on to the Aeolian Islands, the picturesque town of Lipari or the active volcanic crater of Vulcano (if not closed), snorkeling on the famous island of Panarea and, as a highlight, at night near the regularly erupting Stromboli.
