Sailing trip Lipari Islands

Experience a fascinating sailing trip from Palermo to the impressive Aeolian Islands, one of the most spectacular volcanic landscapes in the Mediterranean Sea.

From Palermo, we set sail north and first reach Vulcano, where steaming fumaroles, black beaches and the striking crater characterize the special atmosphere of this island. We continue to Lipari, the lively main island of the archipelago, which delights with its charming alleyways, turquoise waters and impressive coastline.

A highlight of this route is Stromboli, whose active volcano offers an impressive natural spectacle, especially in the evening hours. From the water, you can experience the “Sciara del Fuoco” in all its intensity – an unforgettable moment on any tour of the Lipari Islands.

After eventful days at sea and on land, the journey comes to an end in Syracuse, filled with impressions of the power of nature, Mediterranean culture and relaxed sailing.

A journey that ideally combines volcanic magic, the sea and the Italian way of life.

Itinerary

Every sailing trip follows the conditions of nature. The itinerary shown is a non-binding orientation and can change depending on wind and weather.

Make your own way to Palermo; an optional transfer from Palermo airport is available. The voyage begins in Palermo, Sicily’s vibrant capital. If you arrive early, you can stroll through the historic lanes of the old town, admire the Arab-Norman architecture or soak up the bustle of the markets. Embarkation on CHRONOS is at around 6 pm. The crew greets guests with a welcome drink as the sun slowly sinks over the harbour. With the first dinner together on deck, the voyage begins – accompanied by a Mediterranean atmosphere, the scent of the sea and anticipation of the days ahead.

After breakfast it’s time to cast off. CHRONOS leaves Palermo and sets a course for the volcanic world of the Aeolian Islands.

Today is all about sailing. As the Sicilian coast slowly disappears over the horizon, we enjoy the tranquillity at sea, relax on deck and perhaps make our first swimming stop in a sheltered bay along the way. Towards evening the silhouettes of the Aeolian Islands rise ahead of us – a spectacular sight in the middle of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Today we discover Vulcano, the island that gave its name to all volcanoes. If you like, you can hike up to the Gran Cratere in the morning. From the crater rim, an impressive view opens up over the entire archipelago. Steam vents, the smell of sulphur and the bizarre landscape are reminders that the earth here is still very much alive.

In the afternoon there is time to swim in the clear water or explore the island’s small coves. We spend the night at anchor in a sheltered bay and savour the special mood of this volcanic landscape.

A short sail brings us to Lipari, the largest and liveliest island of the archipelago. The charming old town invites you to wander, while the archaeological museum offers fascinating insights into the islands’ thousands of years of history.

From the fortress above the harbour, the view sweeps over white houses, colourful fishing boats and the deep blue sea. In the evening we enjoy the southern Italian flair on a stroll along the promenade or over a glass of wine in one of the little waterfront restaurants.

Today we sail on to Stromboli. From far off you can already see the striking volcanic cone rising straight out of the sea. The constantly active volcano has fascinated seafarers and travellers alike for centuries.

As dusk falls, the natural spectacle for which Stromboli is famous begins: small eruptions of lava regularly light up the night sky. From the ship we watch the glowing bursts along the Sciara del Fuoco – an unforgettable sight. Tonight dinner on board comes with one of the most spectacular panoramas in the Mediterranean.

After the volcanic experiences of the past few days, we set a course for Sicily’s east coast. Under sail we pass the impressive coastal scenery and once again enjoy the calm of the open sea.

In the afternoon we reach Taormina. Perched high above the sea, it is one of the most beautiful towns in Sicily. On a stroll along the Corso Umberto we discover elegant squares, small boutiques and charming cafés. A highlight is the famous Greek theatre with its spectacular view of Mount Etna and the Ionian Sea.

Today we sail on along the east coast to Syracuse, one of the most important cities of Greek antiquity.

In the evening we enjoy the traditional Captain's Dinner – the festive finale of an extraordinary voyage among volcanoes, islands and Sicilian culture.

After breakfast the voyage ends in Syracuse. Guests leave CHRONOS with a wealth of memories of fascinating volcanic landscapes, Mediterranean island towns and relaxed days under sail. If you wish, extend your stay in Syracuse and visit the archaeological park with its Greek theatre and the famous “Ear of Dionysius”. Just as appealing is a stroll through the old town of Ortygia with its Baroque façades, narrow lanes and lively squares.

In summer it is (almost) always nice and warm – although it usually remains pleasant on board above the water – in spring and autumn it is cooler, you sometimes need a sweater, and the weather is more changeable than in summer. The winds of the Mediterranean are as diverse as the countries and can be very different depending on the region.

Life on board the Sailing-Classics yachts is very safe and well organised. The vessels meet the highest safety standards and are inspected annually. The captain and helmsman are graduates of a professional maritime college and undergo continuous professional development. The rest of the crew also receive intensive training in how to deal with emergencies. A compulsory safety briefing takes place at the start of every voyage. Furthermore, despite their speed, the yachts sail with remarkable stability – even in heavy weather, hardly any water comes on deck.

Both German and English are spoken on board the Sailing-Classics yachts. The language used amongst the international crew is English, whilst they communicate with guests in both German and English. On the KAIRÓS, we cannot always guarantee communication in German.

Meals on board Sailing-Classics are organised on a full-board basis and are included in the tour price. The day begins with a generous breakfast buffet, followed by a light two-course lunch and coffee and cake in the afternoon. In the evening, the on-board chef prepares a three-course dinner. On the final evening, the festive Captain’s Dinner is the culinary highlight. Once a week, a dinner is held ashore to sample the regional cuisine – this is not included in the tour price. Special dietary requirements and allergies can be catered for if notified in advance.

Sailing-Classics organises shore excursions using the crew’s motorised dinghies. On request, the crew will take you ashore and collect you again free of charge – simply let the team know in good time. In addition, in many sailing areas, the crew organises guided shore excursions with a local guide or accompanied by a crew member. The price per participant is communicated in advance and charged to your on-board account. Of course, you are also welcome to explore the surrounding area on your own.

The cabins on board the Sailing-Classics yachts are comfortable and practically furnished. Each cabin has its own en-suite bathroom with a toilet and shower cubicle, individually controlled air conditioning, a wardrobe, a hairdryer, and hand and bath towels. 230-volt sockets are available for charging electronic devices. A reusable water bottle is provided in every cabin and can be refilled at the water dispenser in the saloon.

At Sailing-Classics, you’re warmly invited to get actively involved in sailing – no prior experience or sailing licence required. You can help set and trim the sails, take the helm yourself, or lend a hand with other tasks on deck. The crew will be happy to explain the basics of sailing to you, show you how radar navigation works on the bridge, or give you a tour of the engine room. Those who prefer to relax can simply enjoy the passing scenery – the motto is: ‘Everything is possible, nothing is compulsory.’

To cancel your sailing holiday with Sailing-Classics, please send your cancellation request by email to info@sailing-classics.com. Written notification is required so that the cancellation can be processed officially. Depending on when the cancellation is made, Sailing-Classics’ tiered cancellation terms and conditions will apply. We strongly recommend that you take out travel cancellation insurance to protect yourself financially.
